First Day Hike, January 1st, 2016

  • First Day Hike – Buncombe Hill Interpretive Trail, Daytona
This 2 mile trail is just enough after a great New Year’s Eve party. By 3 pm you should have recovered. It’s at the end of Indian Lake Road in Daytona Beach off of Route 92. It winds through several habitats and goes down to the site of an old Turpentine Camp with great history. Much to see along the way. We’ll take our time on this 2 mile trek. But be prepared. No open toed shoes and long pants recommended. Perhaps bug spray and definitely water. Adults only and no dogs. Space is limited, so call or email for a reservation. Roger@RogerFulton.com or, afternoons or evenings, 386-956-6089. First come; first served.
It's not easy to find so pay attention to the directions. And, it will cost you $2.00 per person, not to us, but to the state's "Iron Ranger" to use the site. Exact change required in the envelope. So arrive early for a picnic if you want and I'll be there by three pm to lead the hike.
Directions: From I-95 take Exit 261 (Daytona Beach) and follow Route 92 west for about 4.2 miles. Turn right onto Indian Lake Road and follow it in for a couple of miles until the pavement ends. Sign in at the kiosk. Then follow the dirt road in another .9 miles to the Indian Lake Recreational Area. Pay your $2.00 per person use fee to the "iron ranger" and you are all set for the day. Enjoy a picnic if you want and I'll be there at 3 pm to lead the hike.

Casual Bike Ride, Wed, Dec 16th, 3-5:30 pm, Green Springs to Osteen and Return

  • We have done the ride from Green Springs to 415, a distance of 5.7 miles. It's flat and straight. But we have been advised that it now goes over 415 and on into Osteen for another 2.5 miles or so. So let's do it all, down and back.
It's one of the shortest days of the year and we should be back before dark, but bring a light, just in case. It is a down and back paved trail and any style of bike is good. Helmets required as always. Bring water. No one left behind! A total of 16.4 miles if you go all the way. If not, you can turn back at your leisure.
  • Email or call for a reservation. (Required due to limited space). Email: Roger@RogerFulton.com or 386-956-6089 afternoons or evenings.

We should have plenty of daylight unless something happens. So bring a light, just in case.
Adults only, no dogs. Contact me for a reservation via email at: Roger@RogerFulton.com
    Other directions:
From I-95 take Exit 261 and travel west on Rte. 92 toward DeLand for approximately 13.5 miles and turn right onto Kepler Road. Follow it .4 miles and turn right onto Old DeLand Road. Alpena, Michigan July 8th

By special invitation we presented our On The Trail course to the Association of Adult Learners in Alpena, Michigan on July 8th, 2015. Great group and the program seemed to be well received. It is the middle segment of our Safe in the Woods course and covers how to read trail markings, what to do in 'critter' encounters and other aspects of being "on the trail."
If you have any interest in a similar presentation for your group, please let us know. Obviously we will travel for the right incentives including travel and lodging. Michigan is a long way from Cortland, NY but it all worked out for a great trip.
I'm here at: www.RogerFulton.com or Roger@RogerFulton.com.

Casual hiking this Saturday, January 10, 2015

Nature Hikes at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge

  • to
  • Myacca Parking area

Mud Lake Road, Deleon Springs, FL (edit map)
  • Mud Lake Road turns to dirt. Follow it down past the railroad tracks and the Myacca Parking Lot is on the right. Then look for Roger's red Jeep.

  • The loop hammock trails are no longer flooded and are wide open. We will incorporate them in a hike covering a little over 3 miles. (We have never done those on these hikes in the past.) It will be a casual pace stopping frequently to explore what we find. The terrain is flat and open. Wear good footwear and no open-toed shoes. We may encounter some areas of light mud, so don't wear those brand new, lily white sneakers you just bought!  Bring water. You may want to arrive a little bit early to tour the small Nature Center on Mud Lake Road before you head down to the hike site. No dogs. Questions? Contact me through this site or through www.RogerFulton.com.

How to be Safe in the Woods Seminar

On Saturday evening, January 24, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm Author and Master Naturalist Roger Fulton will present a seminar on How to be Safe in the Woods. The seminar is based on his newest book of the same name. In a series of Powerpoint presentations, he will cover the basics of how to explore natural areas in Florida and elsewhere safely, from the Cascade Mountains to the Florida swamps. So whether you are out for a short hike, a photo shoot of wildlife or a more adventurous outing, this presentation could help you, and others with you, to prevent serious problems and return home safe and happy. “No problems” doesn’t happen accidentally! Topics include what you need to be prepared to go out into the woods, how to read trail markings, and what to do if you encounter an alligator, a bear or other natives of Florida. He will even guide you on what to do if you get disoriented or lost.
Your price of admission to this 2 ½ hour seminar is to bring with you a copy of Roger Fulton’s newest book titled, Safe in the Woods – Tips, Techniques and Advice for Safety and Survival. ($19.95) If you already have a copy, just make a reservation and show up with the book in hand. If you need a copy you can obtain one locally from the store at Hontoon Island State Park in Deland, online at www.Commonmanbooks.com or www.RogerFulton.com  or make arrangements with Roger to pay for one by mail or at the door. In any case, please make a reservation so we can plan ahead for a comfortable and successful seminar.
(And I am told that the World of Beer is next door to the seminar location. Some of us may want to de-seminarize afterward.)   Contact point for Roger and reservations is at: Roger@RogerFulton.com or through his website at: www.RogerFulton.com.  The seminar location will be at: Keller Williams Realty, 3510 S. Nova Rd., Suite 112, Port Orange, FL 32129. (In the new Tuscan Village Shoppes between Madeline Avenue and Herbert Street.)
This will likely be the only session presented this winter in Florida, so make your reservation soon and we look forward to seeing you there!
